Why Buildscout have partnered with the Federation of Master Builders

Buildscout has partnered with the Federation of Master Builders to help position vetted, professional builders earlier in the homeowner journey by connecting them to projects at the point planning is submitted, improving project alignment, encouraging architect referrals, and reducing the opportunity for rogue traders to compete.

Why Buildscout have partnered with the Federation of Master Builders

Since the beginning of Buildscout, we’ve challenged the status quo of how top quality SME builders generate top quality leads.

We believe that trusted, qualified builders shouldn’t have to compete with rogue traders and their pipeline should be full of projects that suit them in terms of type of work, location and scope.

For years, the system has worked the same way: homeowners decide they want to build, they start searching online, ask around for recommendations, and eventually speak to a few builders. By the time this happens it often becomes a race to the bottom.

That’s why we’ve partnered with the Federation of Master Builders. They have always championed professionalism, high standards, protected the reputation of skilled builders, and given homeowners confidence in who they’re trusting with their homes.

But if we are serious about raising standards across the industry and particularly in lead generation, builders have to be involved with projects earlier in the process as this is where misalignment often happens and trust can be built.

Early Visibility

Our partnership with the Federation of Master Builders drives a key belief. Professionalism should be proactively positioned early, not discovered late.

The FMB has long stood for craftsmanship, accountability and trust. Its reputation has been built on vetting, standards and protecting the credibility of skilled builders across the UK.

Buildscout is helping ensure that when homeowners take the significant step of submitting planning, they are connected with vetted, professional builders from the outset.

This shift matters. Because the earlier expectations are set around quality and standards, trust and relationships are built meaning a stronger the stronger the case is for using and FMB member to build their project and to avoid a price race to the bottom.

Targeting the right projects

Builders are frequently presented with opportunities that fall outside their expertise, their geography, or their available capacity. Time is spent pricing projects that were never the right fit, which could be time spent on projects that do fit.

We believe lead generation should not be about volume. It should be about precision. That means enabling builders to focus on projects that align with:

  • Their specialism
  • Their service area
  • Their pipeline and timeframe
  • The scope and scale they are best equipped to deliver

When alignment improves, everything improves. Conversations are more focused. Pricing is more accurate. Delivery is smoother. Margins are protected and reputations are strengthened.

Encourage referrals from architects

Architects are often the first professionals involved in a homeowner’s project and are frequently asked for builder recommendations.

Through Buildscout, builders can see when an architect in their network submits planning. They also have access to the planning documents and drawings, giving them the context needed to have a meaningful conversation about the project from the outset.

This makes it easier for architects to confidently refer builders they trust, while builders can engage earlier with the right information and a clearer understanding of the project.

Reducing the space for rogue traders

In an article released by the Federation of Master Builders, Rogue traders have cost homeowners over £14.3bn. But that’s not all they’ve cost. They’ve cost reputable builders their reputation.

At Buildscout, we only work with qualified professionals particularly those aligned with organisations like the Federation of Master Builders, where standards, vetting and accountability are fundamental.

By putting these professional builders in front of homeowners at the point planning is submitted, before the open search begins, before directories are trawled, before price-led comparison dominates, we narrow the window in which rogue traders can operate.

If a homeowner’s first exposure is to credible, vetted professionals, the tone of the entire project changes.

What this partnership will bring FMB members

This partnership is not simply about visibility. It is about reshaping how leads are generated. Moving from reactive searching to proactive trust building.

From:

  • Waiting to be found
  • Competing on price
  • Chasing unsuitable work

To:

  • Being positioned early
  • Competing on professionalism
  • Securing projects that genuinely fit

Ganesh Thangavel, Commercial Director at Buildscout:

“This partnership is about fundamentally reshaping how SME builders win work. By connecting FMB members with homeowners at the point planning is submitted, we’re creating earlier trust, smarter targeting, and less room for rogue traders to operate.  Our goal is simple: put professional, vetted builders first, protect their reputations, and ensure the right projects land with the right businesses.”

To celebrate our new partnership we’ve made a custom package exclusively for FMB members. For £199+VAT a month, you’ll get access to buildscout and gain the ability to target homeowners that have submitted planning for projects that suit your expertise and scope, in a location you want to work and in a time frame you want to do the work.
